Flynn Rider's Charm in "Tangled" Explored

(18) The held poses in Tangled therefore conflict with the common practice of 3D CG animation. Yet in Tangled there are moments when characters are completely motionless, in the lantern scene for example, Rapunzel holds a static pose for almost 2 seconds. Other examples can be found throughout Tangled including an early shot that introduces Flynn Rider on top of the palace roof. This moment indicates that the floating lanterns have been a childhood comfort for Rapunzel in the way a child may find security in a cherished blanket or toy. Returning again to a mid shot of Rapunzel we see she is gazing up at the lanterns in the same held pose.

Tangled Up in Everlasting Charm: Final Thoughts on Flynn Rider’s Legacy

Outside his relationships with Rapunzel and Cassandra, Eugene struggles with a number of other issues. Eugene succeeds in doing so by using his expertise to instruct the guards on how to properly capture a thief. In "In Like Flynn" and "The Way of the Willow", Eugene tries to strengthen the relationship between himself and his future in-laws—most notably, the hardened King Frederic. In "The Return of Strongbow", Lance Strongbow returns to Corona in hopes of enlisting Eugene to assist the former in a heist, though, in a turn of events, Eugene and Rapunzel get Lance to reform. Together, they partake in a number of misadventures, one of the most significant beings in "Big Brothers of Corona", in which Eugene and Lance are tasked to reform two juvenile thieves that had been plundering Corona.

Mulan’s Final Design

The concept art for “Aladdin” was inspired by the art of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, who was known for his bold flowing lines, which seemed to production designer Richard Vander Wende to match with Arabic calligraphy. This version of Jasmine, while looking rather different, showcases Hirschfeld’s influence. In the end, it was decided that Aurora should have curled blonde hair and a pleated skirt to go with Earle’s art. However this final design led to difficulties in animating the character because of how exact the line art was, leaving little to no room for error in the animating process.

Eugene is knocked unconscious and tied to a boat, which is set to sail toward the kingdom. When Rapunzel sees his silhouette steering the boat away from her, she is tricked into believing Eugene abandoned her and returns with Mother Gothel to the tower out of despair. Later, Eugene's boat crashes into the guard tower near the jail, jolting him back to consciousness, but as he realizes that Rapunzel is in trouble and calls out for her, he is captured by the guards. The next day, as he is taken to be hanged, he notices the Stabbington Brothers in their own cell. Breaking free from the guards momentarily, he confronts them, forcing them to reveal that Mother Gothel was the one who told them about Rapunzel and her hair.

The confessions gradually form into a joyous party celebrating dreams, though this is cut short once the guards arrive, along with the apprehended Stabbington Brothers, much to Flynn's shock. Everything he ever wanted, however, quickly lost its appeal in the days he met Rapunzel. When Flynn met the lonesome girl in a remote tower, he was quite irritated to be coerced into taking her to see the Festival of Lights at the kingdom so that he could get back a valuable stolen tiara she had hidden from him.

The Legacy of Flynn Rider in Disney’s Pantheon of Characters

He unabashedly committed acts of thievery on the royal family of Corona, all to achieve a selfish lifelong goal of becoming as wealthy as humanly possible. During Eugene's infancy, the kingdom was corrupted by a powerful opal that threatened to destroy the land. King Edmund ordered for a kingdom-wide evacuation to protect his subjects from the opal's destructive power—including Eugene, who was escorted out of the kingdom by a servant woman and later placed in an orphanage. He grew up believing that his parents were fearless adventurers traveling the world to make names for themselves. Eugene remained hopeful that once they did, they would return to the orphanage and take him back.

Unfortunately, they must put their engagement on hold once again until they deal with Cassandra once and for all after she returns to the kingdom to exact her revenge. A moment before kissing Rapunzel, Eugene is distracted by the sight of the Stabbington Brothers on the shore, and appears to come to a conclusion about his satchel. After attempting to abandon his life of thievery in hopes of starting a new life with Rapunzel, the brothers reveal that they know about Rapunzel and her hair, and express their desire to use her for wealth.

Character information

One day, while pregnant, the queen of a nearby kingdom falls ill and the flower is used to restore her and her unborn child, Rapunzel, to health. She raises her as her own daughter and uses the magical properties of Rapunzel’s hair to retain her own youth. On her birthday each year, Rapunzel is able to see floating lights in the night sky from her tower window.

In a kingdom of timeless tales and legendary figures, Flynn Rider’s saga is one that resonates beyond its pages, echoing in the hearts of fans across generations. While “Mulan” was in production, the animators knew that this Disney princess would be much different from her predecessors. She wouldn’t need a prince to save her and she would have much more strength than the girls in previous films, so the animators wanted to show that by giving the character a body shape that was not similar to a Barbie doll. Their concept art reflected Mulan’s strength without focusing too much on her feminine features. This early art of Tiana, who was originally named Maddy, is just a handful of the plentiful and varied concept art needed to decide on a design for a Disney princess.

“The Artistocats” was a 1970 animated film from Disney that was in production for about nine years. During that time, the story went through many changes and the script was changed multiple times before filming started. Developing the look of the characters took over 18 months, but even early designs of the animals in the story look similar to their finished counterparts. But early concept art shows that the writers weren’t always set on him looking like a traditional dragon. Some of his early designs make him look rounder and more anxious, which shows that his personality wasn’t set in stone from the beginning, either. Tiana's name, hairstyle, outfit, and even occupation were changed along the course of the movie’s development, but it was worth it to get to one of the hardest working characters in Disney’s repertoire.

One such character, who has swashbuckled his way into the contemporary Disney pantheon with flair unparalleled, is Flynn Rider. But what is it about this dashing rogue that has us all tangled up in his captivating allure? Let’s dive into the saga of Flynn Rider and uncover the secrets behind his enduring charm.
